This quartet of four paintings collectively called the ‘Seasons’ series might equally have been called ‘Directions’ or even ‘Times of Day’--there being an overlay of all three in each of the titles.
It is an asymmetrical quartet having a ‘suite’ of three winter titles: West Fall Afternoon; North Winter Night and East Spring Morning, with a ‘one of’ summer image, South Summer Noon as the fourth. The first three all wound up having ice in them, characteristic of those seasons on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, where some ice is present in the offing for ten months of the year. The fourth, South Summer Noon, originated at Sandbanks on the South Coast of the Island.
Everywhere I go on the shores of this great Island I see wide, high skies and immense acreages of water stretching to an horizon as straight as sight, with wind lines and ice lines as straight as the horizon itself, endlessly; but I want to back away from this before it becomes overtly formulaic, and I wanted to do it in this format because that is what these ‘minimalist’ paintings have been all about--seasons of the year, times of the day, the directions to infinity.
